Why Electronic Cigarettes Are Gaining Ground

The European Parliament voted on Tuesday to water down proposed tobacco legislation, rejecting an immediate ban on menthol cigarettes and scaling down the size of health warnings on packets following intense lobbying by tobacco companies. The parliament also said manufacturers should be free to sell smokeless e-cigarettes, which deliver nicotine electronically and are a rapidly growing market, as a consumer product when not being marketed as an aide to help people quit smoking. Another CDC study – a customer poll — reports that between 2009 and 2010, awareness of e cigs jumped from 16.4% to 32.2% while use of e cigarettes among polled customers jumped from 0.6% to 2.7%. Current smokers and current users of tobacco products were most likely to use electronic cigarettes. Women were among those most likely to try e cigarettes.

In addition to these studies, there is anecdotal evidence that electronic cigarettes are becoming more popular. There are advocacy groups – consisting of vaping enthusiasts – who are trying to raise awareness about the products. There are also special e cigarette events to introduce customers to new products. Shops – even small shops – are increasingly stocking e cig products and there are businesses cropping up that cater just to vaping enthusiasts. There is even a filmmaker making a documentary about the products. The news is filled with information and articles about e cigarettes and lawmakers in several states are considering new laws to ensure that the products stay out the hands of minors.

It seems that electronic cigarettes are everywhere, and to those who are interested in the product, it is no surprise. Although e cigarettes have been around since the early 2000s, the number of brands, flavors, and options is now at all-time high. There are companies catering to women and to those who want high-octane throat hits. Many manufacturers are also creating made-in-the-USA products and e liquids with new flavors and true-to-life tastes. It is even possible for customers to have their own unique flavor blends created.

Another reason for the popularity of electronic cigarettes may be that laws regarding traditional cigarettes continue to tighten. Not only are traditional cigarettes not allowed in most public areas, but tax laws mean that these products are becoming increasingly expensive. Awareness campaigns have made smokers more aware of the risks of smoking, as well. E cigarettes, on the other hand, can be enjoyed in many public places and are often less expensive to use. With celebrities pictures vaping, more people are aware of these products – and interested in trying them.
